San Francisco 49ers backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick started a world of controversy since he refused to stand for the national anthem. Many in the sports world and beyond talked about what this meant and why he was doing it, siding with him (or not) on the issue.
Through every explanation and as everything unfolded, Kaepernick’s mission became very clear and he managed to silence a lot of critics in the process.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street, and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.
This is not something that I am going to run by anybody. I am not looking for approval. I have to stand up for people that are oppressed. … If they take football away, my endorsements from me, I know that I stood up for what is right.”
Turns out a lot of fans have been in his support, because he has managed to spike the sale of his jerseys. Apparently, he has sold more jerseys the past week than in the whole year total.
Even President Obama has shown support for the QB, saying that Kap is only “exercising his constitutional right”.”
Colin Kaepernick is now the 49ers best selling jersey. More of his gear sold in last week on the 49ers site than the past 8 months combined.
