After 28 seasons of The Simpsons, it’s rare that the show does something it has never done before, but that’s what happened Sunday night: For the first time ever, The Simpsons was an hour long.
The episode, titled “The Great Phatsby,” was a mix between The Great Gatsby and Empire. After going to a party at a mansion across the lake from Mr. Burns’s mansion, Homer and Mr. Burns befriended rap mogul Jay G. The guys went around spending ridiculous amounts of money until Jay G stabbed Mr. Burns in the back by bankrupting him.
In an effort to get back at Jay G, Homer and Mr. Burns enlisted Jazzy James (Keegan-Michael Key), a disgruntled ex-partner of Jay G’s, to help write a revenge rap. While in the studio, the guys were interrupted by Praline (Taraji P. Henson), Jay G’s ex-wife, who also wanted to get some revenge, and she brought some friends. Rappers RZA, Snoop, and Common added their lyrical tongue-lashing to the track, since Jay G had wronged them in the past as well.
In the end, Praline, Jazzy James, and all the other rappers sold out and gave in to Jay G. So the revenge rap was never released, and RZA left Homer, Bart, and Mr. Burns with a bit of advice when he told them, “Lesson one: Protect your neck.”
